STATEMENT REGARDING CHARGES
The Township Committee understands the public’s interest in matters involving the leadership of the Springfield Police Department. We have a responsibility to ensure that the Department is administered properly and that public resources are managed responsibly.
The Committee did not reach the decision to administratively charge our police chief lightly. It considered whether the matter could be resolved without formal charges and regrets that it concluded there was no responsible alternative to bringing them. The Committee believes the issues must be addressed through the process established by law, which gives the Chief an opportunity to respond and permits a fair determination based on the record.
Any disciplinary action must follow applicable law and established procedures. Allegations are not findings of misconduct, and the Chief is entitled to a fair opportunity to respond to any charges properly brought. As such, the Township Committee has not made a final disciplinary determination.
Because personnel matters and internal affairs information are subject to confidentiality requirements, we cannot discuss the merits of particular allegations publicly. We will provide further information when disclosure is authorized or required by law.
Our commitment is to a fair process, responsible government, and dependable police services for Springfield residents.
