Updates from the Township Committee Meeting held on September 22, 2026.

DPW

Recycling
- Plastics bags are not permitted in recycling cans. Cans with plastic bags will not be picked up. The reason being; the recycling gets put on a belt and goes through a machine but the plastic bags get caught in the machine and then have to be manually removed by someone.
- Please put recycling out in a can with a lid to prevent it from blowing away.
Recycling Center:
- The town continues monitoring the recycling center for illegal dumping.
- Seven summonses have been issued since September 12, in addition to previous summonses.
Railroad ties were illegally dumped in the creek near the bridge by the pool/ball field. DPW has removed them.
Bulk collection has significantly improved, only 1 address exceeded the allowed limits during the latest collection
Bridge near Hershey Building
- The old bridge crossing the creek near the former DMV lot had deteriorated badly.
- The town built a replacement bridge in-house.
- Outside bids were reportedly $25,000+, while the town completed the project for under $2,000.
- The new bridge has been installed.
Townwide Plantings
- Fall plantings were completed through the Greening Union County grant.
- 50 additional trees will be planted throughout town.
- This brings the town’s total to approximately 100 trees planted this year.
Roads
- Colfax Avenue: Water company will mill and pave the road because its work damaged the roadway. Township will handle the curb work.
- Henshaw: Town will handle the roadwork.
- Hilltop: Paved September 17th.
- Linden and Wabeno: Concrete work and handicap ramps have begun.
- Fieldstone: Mark-outs have been requested, with work expected to begin in early October.
- Crosswalks: Striping work is underway with assistance from the county and Millburn.
  - The stamped/decorative crosswalks were removed because they had deteriorated. Plowing, road salt, and repeated freeze/thaw cycles caused the stamped material to break apart.
  - The town has chosen to use traditional asphalt with painted white striping rather than repeatedly replacing the stamped material for long-term cost effectiveness and easier maintenance.

Other Updates

Tennis Courts
- Bids have been received/are being processed.
- The tennis court project is expected to be awarded in October, once the grant funding becomes available.
Netflix Filming
- The courtroom was used by Netflix for another episode of “Big Mistakes.”
- Crews were here for only 3 days,; set up, filming, and then clean up.
- Everything went well.
Oakland Park:
- Park is essentially complete.
- Additional landscaping was completed:
  - 4 trees planted along Oakland Avenue. Additional trees planted along the side, back, and center lawn.
  - 100+ bulbs planted for flowers next year.
  - Flower baskets may be added next spring.
- The park sign was considered too harsh/industrial-looking.
  - Plans are to soften it with vines, lights, and planters.
- Fencing will be installed this week to separate the park from neighboring properties and protect the plantings.
- Shade structures are scheduled to ship October 7 and should be installed shortly after arrival.
- An official park opening is planned for October 13 at approximately 5:00 PM, before the next meeting.

Developments

Gomes building
- Work on the Gomes building is progressing, but it is not yet ready for occupancy.
- The town will not issue a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) or Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (TCO) until the required work is fully completed.
- All outstanding fines must also be paid.
- The commercial space has passed inspection and can begin looking for tenants, but there are currently no COs/TCOs.
- Fire safety improvements have been made:
  - Sprinkler system is operational and centrally monitored.
  - Fire alarms are operational.
  - Standpipes are installed and functioning.
- Air-conditioning ducts that were hanging too low in the garage and affecting parking have been reconfigured.
