Last week Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Union County planted blue flags outside Springfield Townhall for Child Abuse Prevention Month this month. CASA Director of Communications and Development, Gretchen Boger-O’Bryan met up with Mayor Alexander Keiser to kick off Flags 4 Foster Youth. Each flag represents 4 foster youths and are to help raise awareness, and raise money for the over 1,000 children in the Union County welfare system.
“Springfield is happy to highlight the tireless work that CASA of Union County undertakes everyday to support our children. Flags 4 Foster Youth is one small action that hopefully brings much needed attention and greater community support.”
-Mayor Alexander Keiser
CASA was started in 1977 by Judge David Soukup; concerned that foster children didn’t have the right representation in court. Thus he began looking for well-trained volunteers who would ensure the children were heard and CASA was started. CASA of New Jersey was started in 2000 and CASA of Union County was later established in 2005.
“Court Appointed Special Advocates of Union County recruits, trains, supervises and supports community volunteers to advocate for abused, neglected and abandoned children placed in foster homes or residential facilities. CASA volunteers ensure children’s best interests remain the priority while working toward establishing a safe, stable and permanent home for each child served.”
