Yesterday, the Township of Springfield held a ceremony for the 21st Anniversary of the September 11th attacks. The ceremony was held in front of Townhall where Mayor Alexander Keiser proclaimed September 11th, 2022 to be Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance.
“On that fateful September morning, we were reminded that the great strength of America is found in the hearts and souls of its citizens, as we witnessed police officers, firefighters, rescue personnel, members of the military and private citizens demonstrating extraordinary courage and risking their lives to save innocent victims.”
-Mayor Alexander Keiser
Officers from the Springfield Police and Fire Department lined up at the flag in front of Townhall. Before the ceremony began the bell was rung 5 times to symbolize the North Tower being struck. Mayor Keiser read a proclamation and Committeeman Richard Huber spoke a few words.
Moments of silence followed before the bell was rung a second time to symbolize the South Towers being struck. It was rung by Firefighter Justin French. After Piper Elden Swindell played the bagpipes, the ceremony was moved to Patriot Park. A wreath was carried by Mayor Keiser and Committeeman Huber from Townhall to the park to honor Springfield residents, Lee Adler and JoAnn Hiltebridle, who lost their lives on 9/11. Police Chief John Cook thanked everyone in attendance before ending the ceremony.
