Good morning Springfield,
There have been numerous questions regarding the closing of the bridge on Short Hills Ave. Here is what is happening there.
The Short Hills Ave bridge has been due for a rebuild for several years. This had been pushed back by Union County numerous times. The bridge was finally deemed structurally unfit for passage. This is not something any associated parties have disagreed with. Closing it was the only option.
Several issues have to be addressed before the bridge construction begins. NJ American Water has a water line running besides the bridge that has to be replaced first. Then Verizon has utilities that run along side the bridge that have to be moved. This also needs to be done before the bridge construction takes place.
NJAWC was not willing to change the pipeline out until the summer was over. They were afraid of a water supply issue during the most demanding time of the year. They say it is scheduled to be replaced shortly as the water demand eases in the fall.
Verizon, from what we have been told, has been less than accommodating to helping this situation move along promptly. I don’t have any other information on Verizon at this time.
While it appears that the bridge is closed for no reason or this is just another waste of money and resources, this is not the case. The bridge is not safe for passage and both Union County and Springfield have to wait for these other utilities to get their projects done so actual construction can begin.
I understand this inconveniences everyone who travels that road and I am confident in saying that Union County is trying to make this rebuild happen as quick as possible.
Be safe and be well,
Mayor Chris Weber
