During Tuesday’s Township Committee meeting Committeeman Harris Laufer, who also serves as Director of the Jewish Federations of New Jersey read the proclamation that stated that the month of May is Jewish American Heritage Month.
“We are reminded that the vibrant culture of the Jewish people has not always been embraced. In a country where diversity should be cherished and protected, Jewish communities continue to deal with hostility, hatred, and narrow-mindedness. Jewish Americans have been a critical part of the American story, greatly impacting the cultural, economic, and intellectual advancement of all people, even while in the face of discrimination and adversity. They have shaped our Nation and have helped steer the course of our history.”
The goal is to recognize Jewish contributions to American culture, history, military, science, government, and more. It begun as Jewish Heritage Week in the 1980s by President Carter. Then in 2006, President George W. Bush proclaimed that May would be Jewish American Heritage Month. After urging by the Jewish Museum of Florida and South Florida Jewish Community for a celebration of Jewish Americans and Jewish American Heritage.
“On a personal note, I want to thank every organization that helps people, not just Jewish people. Thank you to the town for being a part of a growing number of communities to recognize Jewish Americans.”
