September 17th was the 235th anniversary of the framing of the Constitution of the United States of America. It was 1783 when the country won its independence from Great Britain, and with that a new government was needed. Alexander Hamilton had called for a constitutional convention to have serious discussions on the matter of a central government. The idea was agreed upon and all 13 states sent a delegate to Philadelphia for the meeting in May, 1787. The Constitution was debated on throughout that entire summer until the three branches of government were developed; Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. Then on September 17th, 1787 George Washington was the first to sign the document.
To commemorate this anniversary Mayor Alexander Keiser proclaimed that Constitution Week is this week; September 17th through the 23rd. The proclamation was presented to Bonnie Morrison; historian of The Church and Cannon Chapter of the NSDAR at last week’s Township Committee meeting.
“It is fitting and proper to accord official recognition to this magnificent document and its memorable anniversary.-And ask our citizens to reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties”
-Mayor Keiser
