Last week, Friday April 28th was Arbor Day; a holiday that celebrates the planting, upkeep and preservation of trees. The first ever Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska where approximately 1 million trees were planted. Arbor Day became an official state holiday (in Nebraska) in 1885 and almost 100 years later it was made a national holiday by President Nixon. Now most states celebrate Arbor Day on the last Friday in April.
To celebrate this year the Department of Public Works and the Springfield Environmental Commission planted a tree and distributed tree seedlings to residents. The tree seedlings were provided by the NJ Tree Recovery Campaign, an Arbor Day Foundation Program. The following tree seedlings were available: (information about each tree was provided to residents/attendees through a QR code)
