Last week the Township of Springfield held its annual Veterans Day Ceremony. Originally the ceremony was to be held at Veterans Memorial Park but it began to rain just before the event started. Luckily the ceremony was able to be held in the Jonathan Dayton auditorium. Many residents showed up to show their appreciation for our veterans.
The ceremony began with Geri Ann Kazimar welcoming everyone inside, then the Invocation was done by Reverend Roberto Fois of the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, followed by Gerry McManus; Commander of American Legion Continental Post #228.
“Veterans are a diverse group represented by men and women of every economic, ethnic, and religious background. They come from every state and territory. But we are bound by one common commitment; to defend America with our lives when called upon.”
-Gerry McManus, Commander of American Legion Continental Post #228
Other speakers at the ceremony included Peter Mongiello who read a brief history of Veterans Day, Carl Ostergaard Jr. who shared the meaning of the POW/MIA flag, and David Penna, Vice Commander of American Legion Continental Post #228, read the names of the Springfield Honor Roll.
Mayor Alexander Keiser was also in attendance; he read a proclamation and took the time to thank our veterans for their service.
“Thank you to all the veterans who are sitting in front of me today. Without you we wouldn’t all be here, your work, your sacrifice, especially amongst your families. We can’t thank you enough.”
Thank you to all our veterans!
