During Tuesday night’s (March 22) Township Committee meeting, the Springfield Fire Department hired two new Probationary Firefighters and promoted a Fire Captain. Captain Mark Russo, who has been with the department for 10 years, was promoted from firefighter to Fire Captain. He was accompanied by his wife, and 2 daughters as he was sworn in by Mayor Alexander Keiser.
“He is an asset, always been an asset, and I look forward to working together.”
-Springfield Fire Chief Carlo Palumbo
Then new Probationary Firefighters Justin French and Robert Scaniello were sworn in, each accompanied by their parents. Scaniello has worked with FDNY EMS in Times Square and in Elizabeth, and French was a volunteer in Branchville. Both had all the certification needed which means the township did not have to send them to the academy.
“On behalf of the Springfield Fire Department, welcome our team, working with the committee and the Township of Springfield, and good luck.”
-Springfield Fire Chief Carlo Palumbo
Mayor Keiser had a few closing words before calling a 5 minute break.
“You guys may not all be from Springfield but you’re joining our family now and you’re serving our residents – we’re all one community and we all work together to keep everybody safe, healthy and happy. – You’re not only Springfield’s helpers, you’re there when we need you the most but more aptly you’re probably our heroes so thank you for doing what you do.”
The swearing in ceremony can be seen on the Township’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.
