Dear Residents of Springfield,
We’ve been informed that there have been several sightings of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the Township of Springfield.
The Township of Springfield, the Springfield School District, and the Springfield Police Department has, and continues to, abide by the NJ Office of Attorney General Directive No. 2018-6 v2.0, Immigrant Trust Directive.
Information on the directive can be found here:
Key Provisions of the directive:
– Local law enforcement agencies are prohibited from inquiring about an individual’s immigration status unless necessary for a criminal investigation.
– Restrictions on the sharing of information with federal immigration authorities, focusing on protecting vulnerable populations.
Things to consider:
-Stay Informed: Understand the rights and protections provided under the directive and how they apply to you and your community.
-Engage with Local Officials:
Communicate with local law enforcement and community organizations about any concerns or questions regarding the directive.
-Report Instances of Discrimination: If you witness or experience discrimination, report it to local advocacy groups or legal aid services or the appropriate authorities. When involving students, our school guidance department is more than equipped to assist.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Springfield Police Department, the Township, or the Board of Education. We are here to help!
Thank you for your attention.
Mayor Harris Laufer
Police Chief Cook
Superintendent Dr. Goldberg
