In response to NJDEP and USEPA mandates, NJAW is currently performing inventory assessments of water service line materials throughout their service areas and is planning to begin work in Springfield Township beginning the week of February 26, 2024; this work is expected to continue through March and into April. The canvass team will begin in Area 1 as shown on the map focusing on the high priority areas along State and County roadways and where pavement projects are planned.
Water service lines connect the water main in the street to customers’ homes, and responsibility and ownership for the water service line is shared by NJAW and the property owner, where the portion from the water main to the water meter is utility-owned, and the portion between the meter and the property is the responsibility of the property owner. Water service lines can be made of copper, plastic, galvanized steel, iron, or lead, and NJAW has been proactive in maintaining records of the utility-owned portion of their service lines and replacing those services comprised of lead or galvanized steel. While in the past it was not required to maintain customer-owned service line records, new regulations require that all portions of the service line be identified and inventoried to allow removal and replacement of all lead and galvanized steel water services by 2031.
NJAW’s qualified contractor, CDM Smith, will be performing a door-to-door canvas to identify customer-owned service line materials at locations where the material is not known. The canvassing inspectors will capture a photograph of the water service as it enters the building, but it will not be necessary to turn off the water to perform this inspection. Our qualified inspectors will carry official company photo I.D. badges and wear logoed, high visibility vests.
Additionally, NJAW will be notifying customers through their customer alert system with the following message:
