This October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; an annual campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer. During this week’s Township Committee meeting Mayor Alex Keiser gave the proclamation that this month will be known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and that October 21st will be National Mammography Day.
Breast cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the breast, it can then invade surrounding tissues and spread to other areas of the body. It is the most common cancer among women; 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. It unfortunately kills more women than any other cancer, with lung cancer being the only exception. Mammography is the process of using X-rays to examine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas, the goal of a mammogram is to detect breast cancer early.
“Everybody please get checked out, especially this month.”
Mayor Alexander Keiser
Also the Health Department has recently released information and resources regarding cancer screenings for anyone who is interested.
This month was also proclaimed as Mental Illness Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of those living with mental health issues and to help reduce the stigma so many experience. Everyone is encouraged to make a difference and help end the stigma that has discouraged many from getting the help they need.
“It is important to maintain mental health and learn the symptoms of mental illness in order to get help when it is needed.”
Mayor Alexander Keiser
