Since the arrival of COVID-19 in early March 2020, there have been a total of 1,878 confirmed (PCR test) and 540 probable (antigen test) COVID-19 cases reported in Springfield Township. The chart above shows the trend in newly reported cases throughout the pandemic. While the number of newly reported cases remained relatively steady throughout the fall, the combination of large, indoor holiday gatherings and the introduction of the highly-transmissible Omicron variant has led to a sharp increase in cases throughout New Jersey. According to the CDC, in the week ending December 25, 2021, the Omicron variant was identified in 88% of samples tested in the NY/NJ region. While breakthrough infections among fully-vaccinated individuals are now more common due to the Omicron variant, cases of serious illness and hospitalization rates have not reached the levels seen during the 2020-2021 winter season surge.
Stay safe!
