March 2018 Winter Storm Warning Notice #2

The Township of Springfield announces the following updates to the previously published Notice #1

The US National Weather Service New York NY has revised a previously issued Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning that is in effect from March 6, 10:00 PM EST until March 8, 04:00 AM EST. The forecast is for heavy snow with total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches possible.  The State of New Jersey is in a declared State of Emergency effective 8 p.m. The Springfield Office of Emergency Management is monitoring the situation and all departments are taking necessary precautions.

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible. Be prepared for significant reductions in visibility at times.  The timing of the storm may affect the ability to clear roads sufficiently in time for the Wednesday and Thursday commutes. Motorists are advised to plan accordingly, leave sufficient time for travel, and drive carefully.  Unnecessary driving during the storm should be avoided. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

As always, per municipal ordinances, an on-street parking prohibition exists on all roads in the event of snow accumulation to allow for plowing and the passage of emergency vehicles. Vehicles parked in the streets may be ticketed and/or towed. Property owners must clear their sidewalks within 24 hours after the conclusion of snow fall. It is also prohibited to plow, blow or shovel snow into the streets.

  • Non-essential municipal offices will be closed on Wednesday, March 7.
  • Jitney service will be suspended in the morning and evening on Wednesday, March 7.  Service announcements for Thursday, March 8 will be published at 7 p.m. the previous evening.
  • Recycling collection originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 7 has been rescheduled for Friday, March 9.  Garbage collection will remain on Thursday and Friday as scheduled.
  • Springfield Senior Citizens Club canceled its monthly meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 8.
  • School closings and delays are determined by Springfield Public Schools and announcements will be made through their communication channels.
  • To report power outages, contact the electric company by visiting FirstEnergy/JCP&L or call 1-888-LIGHTSS  (1-888-544-4877).  Downed wires should immediately be called in to your electric company or local police/fire departments. Customers should never go near a downed power line.
  • To report a gas leak, contact the gas provider (PSE&G) by calling 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).
